2. Why Magnalium? The Best of Both Worlds
Magnalium is an alloy — 50% Aluminium and 50% Magnesium by weight. This is not simply a mix of two powders. The metals are melted together and atomized into uniform particles, creating a material that burns differently than either pure metal alone.
When Magnalium burns, the magnesium component ignites first (lower ignition temperature), rapidly heating the aluminium component which then releases its energy in a brilliant, sustained reaction. The result: brighter than aluminum, more stable than magnesium, and more cost-effective than either at equivalent performance levels.
In practical terms, 100 grams of Magnalium flash powder produces a report comparable to 130-140 grams of aluminum-only flash — and the magnalium version is less sensitive to friction and impact.
3. When to Use Pure Magnesium Powder
Magnesium powder is the heavyweight champion of brightness. At 3,100°C flame temperature, no other metal fuel comes close. If your application demands the absolute maximum light output — military signaling flares, stadium pyrotechnics, or premium consumer fireworks — magnesium is your answer.
However, magnesium comes with trade-offs. Pure magnesium reacts with moisture in the air, forming a hydroxide layer that degrades burn performance over time. 4. Aluminum: Reliable, Affordable, Versatile
Aluminum powder is the most widely used metal fuel in pyrotechnics — and for good reason. It is the most stable in storage, the most forgiving in compositions, and generally the least expensive per kilogram. If you are producing fireworks at scale and need consistent, predictable performance batch after batch, aluminum is your foundation.
The trade-off: aluminum produces less brightness per gram than magnesium, and less spectacular spark effects than magnalium. But what it lacks in drama, it makes up for in reliability. An aluminum-based flash powder stored for three years in a sealed container will perform nearly identically to day one — something no magnesium composition can claim.
For glitter effects, slow-burning fountains, and large-volume consumer fireworks where cost-per-unit matters, aluminum remains the industry standard.

- 🔴 Magnesium + Chlorate: Do not combine. This is one of the most friction-sensitive mixtures in pyrotechnics. It has caused fatal accidents.
- 🟡 Magnalium + Chlorate: Can be used with extreme caution and strict process controls. The magnesium content makes it more sensitive than aluminium-chlorate.
- 🟢 Aluminum + Chlorate: Relatively stable. The standard flash powder for decades.
- 🟢 All three + Potassium Nitrate: Stable compositions. Magnalium-KNO₃ is the preferred flash powder in professional fireworks — brighter than Al-KNO₃, safer than Mg-KNO₃.
