2. Purity and Consistency — The Real Defense Requirement
Defense programs rarely fail because someone ordered “the wrong mesh” once. They fail when batch 47 burns differently from batch 12. That drift usually comes from:
- Assay wandering below the stated Mg percentage
- Iron or silicon contamination shifting ignition temperature
- Wide particle-size distribution within a nominal mesh cut
- Oxide build-up from poor packaging or humid storage

3. Mesh Selection Without Guesswork
Coarser magnesium (around 40–80 mesh) is common in illuminating compositions where sustained burn matters. Finer Magnalium (200–325 mesh) shows up where surface area drives fast reaction — initiating elements and some countermeasure charges. Exact mesh is formulation-specific; what you should demand is a measured sieve curve, not a marketing label that says “100 mesh” while shipping a broad cut.
4. Packaging, UN Classification, and Storage
Magnesium powder ships as UN 1418 (flammable solid). Magnalium alloy powder is typically handled under UN 1396. Defense stockpiles often sit longer than commercial fireworks inventories, so moisture control is non-negotiable. 5. Export Controls — Say This Out Loud
Metal powders destined for defense end-use can trigger export-control and end-use verification requirements. Legitimate manufacturers ask for end-use declarations. If a broker offers “defense grade” magnesium with no paperwork and no questions, walk away.
